Rohit Sharma-led Indian team lands in New York for T20 World Cup
The first batch of Indian players, led by captain Rohit Sharma, has arrived in New York for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit was accompanied by a 10-member squad, but team vice-captain Hardik Pandya and star batsman Virat Kohli were not part of the initial contingent. They are expected to join the team later. Head coach Rahul Dravid and the rest of the support staff also arrived in New York.

In addition to captain Rohit, the first batch also included fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Suryakumar Yadav, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, all-rounders Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel. Reserve players Shubman Gill and Khaleel Ahmed were also present with them. Kohli played the IPL eliminator match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. He will join the team later. Hardik had gone to the UK after the completion of the IPL league stage. The IPL 2024 season playoffs, led by five-time champion Mumbai Indians captain Hardik, failed to make it to the playoffs. Rajasthan Royals played the second qualifier in Chennai on Friday night, so Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Avesh Khan (reserve) will leave for New York on Monday.
India will play a practice match against Bangladesh
After reaching New York, the team will rest for a few days and then play their only T20 World Cup warm-up match against Bangladesh at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The Indian team will play three league matches in this new stadium, including a clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9. Construction work on this stadium started in January and was completed this month.
Indian team in Group-A
Rohit Sharma-led Indian team is in Group-A of the T20 World Cup, which includes Pakistan, Ireland, USA, and Canada. The Indian team will start their campaign against Ireland on June 5. It is worth noting that India has not won any ICC title since 2013. The USA is co-hosting an ICC tournament for the first time and its national team will also make its debut in the global competition. This time the T20 World Cup is being hosted by two countries. Apart from the USA, matches of this global tournament will also be played in the West Indies.
